Teaching the times tables to a class of thirty children, each with different starting points and attitudes, is one of the perennial challenges of primary maths. The pressure has increased in England with the introduction of the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4, which expects pupils to recall facts up to twelve times twelve fluently. This article sets out classroom-tested strategies that build genuine understanding, keep every child engaged and prepare pupils for assessment without resorting to joyless drilling.
Before children commit facts to memory, they need to understand what multiplication is. The concrete-pictorial-abstract approach works well here. Start with physical objects arranged in equal groups or arrays, move to drawn representations of those arrays, and only then introduce the abstract number sentence.
Arrays are particularly valuable because they make the commutative property visible: a three-by-four array turned on its side becomes a four-by-three array with the same number of items. This single idea halves the number of facts pupils feel they must learn.
Follow a sequence that builds on prior knowledge: the 2s, 5s and 10s first, then the 4s and 8s through doubling, then the 3s, 6s and 9s, and finally the 7s, 11s and 12s. Making the relationships explicit — that the 6s are double the 3s, for example — helps pupils see maths as connected rather than as a list to memorise.
Revisit earlier tables continually. A short daily recap of previously taught facts prevents the forgetting that otherwise undermines progress.
Brief, energetic whole-class routines are excellent for daily fluency practice. Chanting, choral counting, quick-fire questioning and games such as around-the-world keep the pace lively and involve everyone. Projecting a quiz onto the whiteboard and racing the clock together injects a sense of shared purpose.
These routines work best as short, frequent bursts — a few minutes at the start of each lesson — rather than occasional long sessions.
A single class will contain pupils who are fluent and pupils who are still grasping the basics. Differentiation need not mean separating them. Mixed-ability pairs, where a confident pupil explains a strategy to a peer, benefit both children, since teaching a concept deepens the teacher’s own understanding.

Regular low-stakes checks tell you exactly which facts each pupil has secured and which still need work. Quick daily quizzes, exit tickets or a rapid recall test at the end of the week provide this information without the anxiety of a formal exam.
Use the data to target teaching. If half the class keeps missing seven times eight, that fact deserves dedicated whole-class attention rather than being lost among the many facts pupils already know.
The Year 4 check is on-screen and timed, giving pupils six seconds per question. Familiarity with this format reduces anxiety, so occasional timed practice under similar conditions is worthwhile. Frame it positively as a chance to show what they know, and emphasise personal improvement over comparison.
Crucially, do not let preparation for the check crowd out genuine understanding and enjoyment. Pupils who understand multiplication and practise a little every day will be ready for the check as a natural consequence of good teaching.
